Golf, it’s often called the “Gentleman’s Game”. A game where style and class go together. A game where dress codes are strictly enforced. Well, most of the time.
However, recently there has been an influx of “Trendy Golfers” who seem to care more about how they look on the course than how they play. It was brought to my attention while I was taking in a little action of the 3rd Round of the AT&T Classic this weekend.
All I wanted to do was relax a little bit before taking a shower for dinner after a long day in a canoe. I flipped on the tube, and had to watch this. A flippen’ popped collar. Are you kidding me? On the PGA tour?
Well, I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe Anthony Kim, who went on to win the tournament, forgot his sunscreen. It looked hot. However, a little more research revealed this. It seems to be common.
On Sunday, the final round of the same tournament, he decided to unveil this. Based on this article in the New York Times, wearing the big buckles seems to be his “bit”. This has got to change. The PGA tour has guys who wear gold shoes, vest and ties, and ridiculous white pants.
The first golfer that I noticed doing this was Jesper Parnevik, who at times can look more like Justin Timberlake than a professional golfer. In my mind, the only thing good that Jesper has contributed to the PGA tour is a wife for Tiger.
Notice Ian Poulter…

This isn’t golf, this is an audition for “Project Runway - the PGA Edition” and it needs to go. Golf doesn’t need Metrosexual’s, it needs a Tiger.

Would David Stern allow one of his players to wear a popped collar under their jersey? King James should try it next year.

Like the Jefferson-Washington comparison in an earlier article, I had not taken full notice of this. When I watch golf in the earlier days, it was masculine attire with collared polos. Now it seems to be getting much more radical. Nothing against European fashion, but I think those fellows are the ones taking it to a new level. They love their capris over there. I remember seeing Poulter at the Byron Nelson last year wearing similar attire.

Poulter and Parnevik are guys that have designers making them clothes. It does seem that most of the European players are the ones going over the top. However, some of the younger players (even American born) are the one’s trying to make a statement. Golf needs polos and sweater vests, nothing else.
