Few would argue the greatness of Brett Favre. Personally, I love the guy. I love the way he plays, I love it when throws a TD and celebrates by jumping on the back of a teammate, I love his zeal and passion for the game. I love it that he holds the “iron man” record for football. He plays hard and he has fun.

However, his recent “flip-flopping” on his retirement stance has put his team in a very peculiar spot and would cost any politician any chance of election. Some would argue that the Packer’s are a top contender to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl and having Brett Favre under center could help put them over the top. Others will say that its time to move on.
Put me in the latter group. Now, I’ll go ahead and say that I obviously have a bias being a Cowboy fan, but I don’t feel that Brett Favre will give Packers enough to get past the NFC Championship. My reasoning? Romo, T.O., Barber, Newman, Pac Man (excuse me, Adam Jones), Witten, DeMarcus Ware, etc….

4 months ago, Favre made a tearful departure from the game of football saying that he still thinks that he can play, he just doesn’t want to go through all the other stuff that’s involved in getting ready for the season, not to mention getting through the season. This is something that had been in the making for the past 4 seasons or so. At the end of every season, fans, coaches, and the media were left to wonder if this was going to be the last season for one of the greatest players to put on a helmet. Favre would take his time contemplating whether or not he wanted to play while the Packer’s are left in waiting.
The Packers went ahead and protected themselves in 2005 by drafting Aaron Rodgers in the 1st Round. For three years, he’s sat on the bench preparing to take over the Cheese heads. The plan seemed to be working when Favre announced his retirement folowing a season that many felt, including myself, the Packers over-achieved. Favre would ride off into the sunset and Rodgers would take over under center.
Until, this past week when Favre asked the Packers for an unconditional release to which the Packer’s denied. Unfortunately, the Packers might be viewed as the bad-guys here. But you can’t blame them for not releasing him. Think of the teams that need a QB and the teams that come to mind the most are right there in the Packers division - the Vikings and the Bears. Why would you release a guy and give another team the upper edge. The only option is to return to the Packers and play in an un-specified role (widely reported as a backup) or for the Packers to trade him.
Favre is running the risk of looking like Roger Clemens. Roger’s constant uncertainty of whether he was coming back or not gave everybody that followed sports the ultimate case of “tired head”. Even my wife, who follows Sports about as closely as I follow the economic policy of Djibouti (shameless), is growing tired of the Favre story. I’m growing tired of the athlete that retires once, twice, three times maybe. The only person that is allowed to do that is Michael Jordan, and I bet he regrets coming back for the third time with the Wizards.
So Brett, do us all a favor and don’t leave a bad taste in our mouths by doing this again. There is something honorable with the fact that you went out on top. You wore 1 uniform your entire career (nobody really counts the Falcons jersey you wore). You’re loved in Green Bay. Just walk away.
And to the Packers, I applaud the decision to stick with the future. You’ll look like the bad guys, but its time to move on. Adios.

Favre put himself right up there with the likeness of Jay Z when he pulled this retired/not-retired crap.

First of all, i can’t help but get excited about the football season when i see a picture of a grown man dumping popcorn in his face.
I think as cowboy fans, we can relate to what packer fans are going through. when emmitt left for the cardinals, it hurt, but we could all realize that the ‘boys needed to move on…and that was with troy hambrick as the replacement.

I agree. Retire. Cry. Miss the fame. Make a comeback…
Come on Far-ve, baby. Let someone else in the spotlight!
