While we here in the metroplex focus most of our professional sports attention on the 2-0 Dallas Cowboys our friends to the north are already amped up for the 2008-2009 NBA season to begin. The much publicized move of the Seattle Supersonics to Oklahoma City has been made and next season we will see Kevin Durrant & Friends play their home games just 200 miles away.
The Thunder, Oklahoma City’s chosen mascot, already have a season ticket waiting list; having sold out their 13,000 season tickets in under five days. This act alone proves just how thirsty those people are for a professional sports team. As much as I enjoyed the Supersonics and feel we need a team in Seattle eventually, it does feel good to have life breathed into that franchise.
But with all the excitement surrounding their debut one question still needs to be addressed: Is that a WNBA logo?
Seriously, look at it. Is it the color scheme or the design that makes it look terrible? I can’t decide. But my mind thinks women’s basketball when I see that logo. Sure, “Thunder” doesn’t give you a lot of options but they could have come up with something better. Here are a few “Thunder” logos I would have voted for had Clay Bennet asked my opinion:
This shirtless, wing headed man with a sledgehammer will get my attention.
Simple, professional, classic look.
A swooping lightning bolt and masculine font make this logo tolerable.
I’ve always been a fan of representing a sound with clouds and a cat. Well done Frisco.
Probably the most accurate depiction of the mascot, this logo would scare my dogs if they saw it coming.
My personal favorite: The creepy man hiding behind the font. I love it.

genius! how does one word provide so many visual options? because it’s a sound!!! although, i guess it’s about as easy to visually represent “thunder” as it is “sonics”. i think it’s the color scheme that makes it seem like WNBA. why are both of the recent “expansion” teams using blue and orange as their colors? i’m anxious to see the jerseys
