We here at thelebsports.com love lists, we’ll rank everything from the top cereals to the top dog breeds. But having a blog dedicated to SPORTS, we have yet to dive into a ranking of top trophies in the world of sports. That is why I have dedicated this weeks post to the top 5 trophies.

While I recognize that this is quite subjective, I have attempted to create some sort of criteria. The criteria is as follows:

1. Size does matter - is it a 2 hander or a one hander. The 2 hander is a bigger trophy, but as you’ll see in the list, sometimes the one handed trophy adds a little “coolness” as a champion lifts it up in the air showing his athleticism.

2. Color - gold is so 1980’s. A silver trophy gets the nod.

3. Durability - does it look like it can withstand the beating it might take in the celebration.

We’ll start from the bottom.

#5 - The Commissioner’s Trophy - Major League Baseball

At an estimated $15,000, the winner of the World Series (Major League Baseball) gets to take home this trophy. At 24 inches tall, this trophy got major deductions for color (gold), history (introduced in 1967), size, and durability.

The 30 flags look like they could be snapped off during the post-game celebration, not to mention put an eye out. Also, a relatively small trophy, because of its circular shape it requires the celebrator to use two hands in lifting it up. The problem this creates is that this trophy isn’t big enough to require the two-handed hoist and makes one look a little weak when holding it.

#4 - The Larry O’Brien Trophy - National Basketball Association

First introduced in 1977, it doesn’t have the history of some of the older trophies. The trophy is made of 16 pounds of sterling silver with a 24K gold overlay. It stands about 2 feet tall making it small enough to be able to hoist up with a single hand. The baseketball on top is the size of an official NBA ball which adds to it uniqueness.

#3 - US Open Tophy - Golf

The only deduction that US Open trophy recieved was for the little figure on top. When caught up in the excitement of victory, much like the flags on the Commissioner’s Trophy (Major League Baseball), this could pose a hazard.

The color, size, and prestige of the trophy are what bring the value of this trophy up in ranking.

#2 - The Vince Lombardi Trophy - National Football League

Color, durability, and value give this trophy the #2 spot in the rankings. Valued at over $25,000, this trophy takes 72 man hours to create. It stands 23 inches tall and weighs about 7 pounds. It appears as though it can take a beating with only smooth surfaces and no hazards if it finds itself on the bottom of the dog-pile. You can take the one handed approach with this trophy while utilizing the second for high fives and “good game” pats. The greatness of this trophy is that is has been given out every year since the NFL-AFL merger in 1967 creating the modern day NFL.

Drumroll please………..drumroll…..

#1 - The Stanley Cup - National Hockey League

There’s no question in my mind about this one. The Stanley Cup isn’t a trophy that your grandma can carry around. This two handed beast requires only those that are in tip top shape to be able to handle it. The color, size, and history are unmatched by the others.

This is the only trophy on the list that the winner does not get to keep. It’s passed around year to year to the winner.

The original cup was donated by Governor General of Canda Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892 as an award for the top amateur hockey club in Canada. It officially became the NHL championship trophy in 1947. Adding to its greatness, once you win the “Cup”, your name is engraved on it along with your teammates.

Victors of the Cup also get to spend a day with it. Some, as Wikipedia reports, have used it to baptize children while some have used it to feed there dogs.

In conclusion, if you don’t like my list, in the words of the great Craig “Junior” Miller, “MAKE YOURSELF YOUR OWN LIST”.
